Need a funky college town with music, history, and Texas charm? I say—head to Denton, Texas! I’ve wandered the downtown square, listened to live music echoing through historic streets, and soaked up the creative energy that fills this town. Just north of Dallas-Fort Worth, Denton has quickly become one of my favorite spots for a weekend with personality. Whether you’re catching a local band, exploring old buildings, or sipping a cold brew, I think you’ll find something here that sticks with you.
Best Time to Visit
I usually head to Denton in the spring or fall—March through May or September through November are perfect for festivals, patio dining, and walks around downtown. You’ll find the weather ideal for exploring. If you visit in summer like I’ve done, be ready for the Texas heat—but also expect plenty of live music and lively local events to make it worth your while.
How to Get There
- Driving in? I’ve taken both I-35E and I-35W to get there—it’s a smooth 45-minute trip from either Dallas or Fort Worth.
- Flying instead? I always use Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). It’s just 30–40 minutes south, and the drive up to Denton is easy and straightforward.
- Don’t want to drive the whole way? I’ve hopped on the A-train commuter rail before—it connects Denton to Lewisville and into Dallas via DART. It’s a fun, relaxed way to roll into town.
Where to Stay
- The Brownlow House: I absolutely love this stylish boutique inn—it’s in a restored historic home near downtown, and you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into a cozy retreat with personality.
- Embassy Suites by Hilton Denton Convention Center: When I want something sleek and modern, this is where I stay. You’ll love the rooftop bar and all the amenities—it’s great for couples or work trips.
- SpringHill Suites by Marriott Denton: I’ve stayed here when I wanted more space and easy access to restaurants and shops. It’s especially great if you’re visiting the universities or traveling with family.
