The Sparta Rock House, located along United States Highway 70, was originally built as a stage stop and toll house on the antebellum turnpike between Crossville and Sparta. It’s considered to be a rare and significant artifact of Tennessee’s turnpike era, constructed by Barlow Fiske as a symmetrical one-story, three-bay stone building between the years of 1835 and 1839. Fiske opened a store at this historic place around 1852. Samuel Denton also owned the Sparta Rock House during the 19th century and there have been many famous patrons, such as Sam Houston, Andrew Jackson, and James K. Polk.
