The Erie Canal is a 363-mile long navigable water route from the Great Lakes to New York City. Constructed in 1817 and opened in 1825, the canal was considered an engineering marvel, providing a direct route for large commercial vessels to travel from New York City to the Midwest. The Erie Canal is a designated National Heritage Corridor. The Erie Canal features five staircase locks that life or lower boats of all sizes over the Niagara Escarpment known as the ‘Flight of Five.’ The Erie Canal and Lockport Locks can be explored on guided canal cruises year-round.
