The New Museum of Contemporary Art features a modest collection of around 1,000 works of contemporary art across an array of media. Located on Bowery Avenue on Manhattan's Lower East Side, the New Museum was founded by Marcia Tucker in 1977 and currently presents the work of little-known and under-recognized artists before they received widespread public recognition, such as Paul McCarthy, Ana Mendieta, Andrea Zittel, David Wojnarowicz, and William Kentridge. The museum hosts biennials and triennials every year as well as organized exhibitions and summer shows and has exhibited works by artists from all the world, from Brazil and Bulgaria to Colombia, Cuba, and South Africa.
