Looking for a lively college town with shopping, parks, and easy access to Baltimore? Head to Towson! I’ve found that Towson blends just the right amount of city energy and suburban calm. As the home of Towson University and the seat of Baltimore County, this town has a youthful feel, charming neighborhoods, and a ton of dining and retail options. Whether you’re popping in for a weekend or staying longer as a home base near Baltimore, Towson makes it easy to enjoy both convenience and character.
Best Time to Visit
In my experience, the best time to visit Towson is during the spring and fall (April–June and September–October). The weather is mild, the parks are colorful, and there’s always something going on—festivals, outdoor concerts, or just a great café patio to relax on. Summer is warm and lively, especially when school’s out, while winter tends to be quieter, great if you’re after a slower pace.
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I usually take I-695 (the Baltimore Beltway), which puts you right in Towson within 20 minutes from downtown Baltimore or about an hour from D.C.
- By Air: I’ve flown into Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) and reached Towson in around 35 minutes by car or ride share. It's super convenient.
- By Train: You can take Amtrak or MARC to Baltimore, then hop on a local bus or ride share to Towson—it’s a quick trip from Penn Station.
Where to Stay
- Sheraton Baltimore North Hotel – I like this spot because it’s literally across from Towson Town Center and walkable to shops and restaurants. Plus, it has a great lobby to unwind in.
- Comfort Inn Towson – If you’re watching your budget, this is a solid option with free breakfast and easy access to the Beltway.
- Delta Hotels by Marriott Baltimore North – This one’s tucked just outside of town in a quieter, more residential area. I’ve stayed here when I wanted a little more calm—it has lovely garden views and comfy rooms.
