The French Market is open-air shopping center in the heart of the French Quarter that stretches for six blocks from Jackson Square to Café du Monde and houses up to 220 vendors on a busy day. Founded as a Native American trading post before European colonization, the market is the oldest of its kind in the country and is included on the Louisiana African American Heritage Trail. Visitors to the market can buy a wealth of items from local art, T-shirts, and hats to Mardi Gras souvenirs, along with an array of local and internationally-inspired food such as fresh gumbo and jambalaya, crawfish, raw seafood, Cajun, Creole and more. The market offers free walking tours on weekdays, a farmers' market Wednesdays and Saturdays, and hosts numerous special events throughout the year.
