If you're like me and need a quick day trip or a peaceful weekend away from L.A., Thousand Oaks is where I always end up. You’ll love how easy it is to feel far from the city without going far at all. I’ve hiked those scenic mountains, browsed the malls, and soaked in that unique suburban-meets-nature vibe—it’s a breath of fresh air. When you’re in the mood for rugged trails in the morning and a relaxing meal in the afternoon, this place delivers every time.

Thousand Oaks, CA Highlights:

  • Wildwood Regional Park: I always tell friends to hike here. You’ll discover waterfalls, epic rock formations, and valley views that make the effort more than worth it.
  • The Gardens of the World: You don’t need a passport to enjoy this spot. I loved wandering through garden styles from around the globe—right in downtown.
  • The Civic Arts Plaza: If you’re into live shows like I am, grab tickets to a concert or Broadway-style performance. It’s surprisingly top-tier for a small city.
  • Paradise Falls: Let me be real—this hidden 40-foot waterfall feels like your own secret escape. You’ll find it tucked into Wildwood, and it's worth the walk.
  • The Oaks Mall: When I need retail therapy or just a chill afternoon, this mall checks every box. You can shop, eat, and catch a movie without ever moving your car.

Best Time to Visit

I’ve found spring and fall (March–May and September–November) are perfect. You’ll get the best weather—ideal for hikes, patio lunches, and full days without the summer crowds or heat. Trust me, you’ll thank yourself for going then.

How to Get There

  • If you are traveling by car: I usually drive, and it’s just a 45-minute cruise northwest from L.A. on U.S. Route 101. Super straightforward.
  • By Train: You can also take Amtrak to Camarillo or Moorpark—I’ve done it before when I wanted a more relaxed trip. Just arrange a rental or taxi to get the rest of the way.
  • By Plane: I’ve flown into both LAX and Burbank. Each airport is about 45 to 60 minutes out. Not bad at all if you’re coming from farther away.

Where to Stay

  • Hyatt Regency Westlake – I stayed here for a weekend getaway and loved the resort vibes and comfy rooms. You’re close to everything, too.
  • Palm Garden Hotel – If you’re traveling with family, this one’s a gem. I appreciated the relaxed feel and tropical landscaping—it really helps you unwind.
  • La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham Thousand Oaks – On a tighter budget? I’ve recommended this to a few friends, and they were all pleasantly surprised. Clean, comfy, and reliable.
