Named after the pioneering family that once owned the land, West Whitlock State Recreation Area is a year-round recreational area that offers a wealth of outdoor fun from hiking and horseback riding to fishing and swimming.

Once a popular stopover site for the Arikara and Mandan people, today, the area draws campers, anglers, and hikers who come to enjoy the spectacular natural surroundings and stock up on fish. The West Whitlock Recreation Area has a campground with sites for tents, and RVs with or without hook-ups, along with picnic tables, fire rings, restrooms with hot showers, and flushing toilets and potable water.

There are also rustic camping cabins with heating, air conditioning, and electricity in scenic locations around the park and amenities such as modern comfort stations, a boat ramp, a fish cleaning station, a ski beach, picnic shelters, and a playground.
