Tonto National Forest is the largest of its kind in Arizona, the edges of which border the Mogollon Rim, the metropolis of Phoenix, San Carlos, and the Fort Apache Indian Reservation. Encompassing over two million acres, the forest has 62 campsites ranging from primitive sites with no drinking water and pit toilets to new sites with electricity, water, and sewerage hookups, picnic tables, and grills. Camping passes are required to camp in the Tonto National Forest, and the region offers an array of outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, mountain biking, horseback riding, picnicking, cross-country skiing, and seasonal hunting.
