The Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore near Empire, Michigan spans across approximately thirty-five miles of coastline on the eastern shores of Lake Michigan, along with the South and North Manitou Islands. The national lakeshore was primarily established for its spectacular natural features that include ancient glacial phenomena, dune formations, beaches, and forests. Things to do and see at Sleeping Bear Dunes include a historic rural farm district, three Coast Guard/Life-Saving Service Stations, the Sleeping Bear Heritage Trail, and much more. There are also an array of recreation activities possible at the lakeshore as well, including hiking and swimming.
