The Santa Cruz Chili Cook Off brings amateur and professional chili chefs from around the greater San Francisco Bay region to the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk for an annual chili cooking competition. The event, founded in 2010, offers free admission to visitors of all ages, with chili tasting kits available for purchase. Visitors are able to sample up to five chili concoctions per kit. Four competition categories honor the best professional and amateur chefs cooking traditional meat and vegetarian red chili dishes. A People’s Choice award is also presented annually, along with awards for the most tasted dish and the most original chili booth.
