"I sailed past the iconic shores of Waikiki and Diamond Head on a breezy catamaran ride with Na Hoku II, and it was everything I’d hoped it would be."

There’s something about being out on the open water in Oahu that just resets your whole mindset. The moment I stepped barefoot onto the Na Hoku II, I felt like I was officially on island time. The warm breeze, the soft rocking of the boat, the view of Waikiki Beach slowly drifting behind me—it was all incredibly calming. I went on a winter sail, and we were lucky enough to spot a humpback whale just off the port side. Everyone on board went quiet, just watching it surface and disappear again. It was magic.

If you're craving epic coastal views, this is the best seat in the house—nothing beats watching Waikiki and Diamond Head fade into the distance from the water.

In the winter months, keep your eyes peeled for whales. I saw one on my cruise and it was unforgettable.

Couples & groups
This is such a fun, low-effort outing. It’s great for a romantic sail, a casual celebration, or just hanging out with friends.

First-time visitors to Oahu
It’s one of those experiences that makes you feel like you’ve really arrived in Hawaii—sun, sea, and island vibes all in one go.

Things to See & Do

  • Catamaran Cruise: Sail for about an hour with panoramic ocean views that show off the coastline in all its glory.
  • Ocean Wildlife: I spotted whales, saw a few flying fish, and even caught a glimpse of a turtle near the surface.
  • Photo Opportunities: The sunlight hits Diamond Head just right out there—some of my favorite Hawaii photos came from this ride.

Special Events

  • Winter Whale Watching: From December to April, this cruise doubles as a front-row seat to the whale migration.

What to Bring

Wear something beach-friendly, bring sunscreen, sunglasses, and I highly recommend a waterproof pouch for your phone or camera. You’ll board barefoot, so leave the fancy shoes behind!

Good to Know

  • Departure Point: Right in front of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider hotel in Waikiki—easy to find and super convenient.
  • Duration: It’s a one-hour round trip, and they run multiple times a day, so it’s easy to fit into your schedule.
  • Booking: I reserved in advance and I’m glad I did—it filled up quickly!

My Final Thoughts & Why I Thought This Trip Worked

The entire one-hour cruise was relaxing and light-hearted. People were laughing, taking photos, and just soaking up the view. I leaned back against the railing, taking in the sweeping view of Diamond Head rising in the distance. The crew was friendly and laid-back, adding to the chill vibe without ever rushing us or being too scripted. It felt like a spontaneous adventure, even though they run these cruises daily.
