Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport has an interest that goes back to the 1920s. In 1929, an airport named Merle Fogg Airport was constructed and opened up on an old, abandoned golf course. The airport was used sparingly in the following years and came under the control of the United States Navy when World War II broke out.

At that time, the airport was renamed Naval Air Station Fort Lauderdale and used for various military purposes in the years that followed. The station classed down in 1946 after the war had ended and the airport was once again under the control of the county authorities. It was renamed Broward County International Airport, with various new passenger routes opening up, primarily to the Caribbean.

In 1959, FLL was given its current name due to its location between the two cities of Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood.
