Plan a visit to two historical gems in Nassau at Fort Fincastle and Fort Montagu . Fort Fincastle was built in 1793 as a watchtower and defensive outpost against pirates in Nassau Harbor. It’s located on Bennet’s Hill, the highest location on New Providence Island, and is connected to the Queen’s Staircase. Named after Lord Dunmore, the British captain who ordered its construction, Fort Fincastle is a daunting structure that is open to visitors daily. Meanwhile, Fort Montague was originally built in 1725 and later reconstructed in 1741. It sits on Nassau’s eastern shoreline and was erected as a defensive outpost against Spanish invaders. Historically, it is best known for being the first place of military action by the United States Marine Corps who captured the fort in 1776 unopposed.
