Old Mission San Luis Rey was founded in 1798, and it then proceeded to go through five different periods of occupation including: Luiseno Indian, Spanish Mission, Mexican Secularization, American Military, and the Twentieth Century Restoration. The mission consists of a ministry of Franciscan Friars within the province of Saint Barbara, who keep the community alive and well through various community fundraising events throughout the year.
The mission has several enticing aspects, including the museum, which has artifacts from the Luiseno Indian culture and traces of the Spanish Franciscans who helped settle the mission in its early days. The mission also offers private retreats that look to offer spiritual renewal, healing, revitalization, and a place for solitude, as well as spiritual direction for those who desire a spiritual companion for guidance. The cemetery of the mission is located in the shadow of the historic church, and it is the oldest cemetery within North County of San Diego. The cemetery is still in operation and is known as sacred ground. It is also considered a National Historic Landmark.
