The California Surf Museum, founded in 1986, chronicles the first twenty-five years of the museum's growth as well as its beginnings. The museum aims at serving as a resource center for those who want to come and learn about surfing, the lifestyle associated with it, and the art and culture that surround it.

By capturing the heritage of this lifestyle sport, the museum hopes to educate future generations on the enjoyment that surfing can bring. The museum is non-profit, has a large selection of artifacts, and puts on various exhibits for guests to see. These exhibits can include information on surfboards, history of surfing legends from around the world, pop culture that exists around surfing, and even exhibits on how to find your own swell.
