When I’m in the mood for a quick Central Valley escape with just the right mix of family fun and small-town flavor, I head to Manteca. It’s perfectly placed between Stockton and Modesto and makes a great base for exploring everything from Yosemite to the Delta. Whether I’m out for a spring festival or passing through on the way to the Sierra foothills, Manteca always feels friendly and familiar—like a California town that hasn’t forgotten its roots.
Best Time to Visit
I’ve found that spring and fall (March–May and September–November) are the absolute best times to visit. The weather’s mild, which is perfect for outdoor festivals, local farm tours, or a stroll in one of the parks. Summer can get hot, but I’ve made the most of it by heading to nearby lakes or enjoying some classic Central Valley water fun. It’s all about timing your activities with the season—and there’s something to enjoy year-round if you do.
How to Get There
- By Car: I usually drive in via Highways 99 or 120. Manteca’s about 90 minutes east of San Francisco and just an hour south of Sacramento—super easy if you’re road-tripping through the region.
- By Air: I’ve flown into Stockton Metropolitan Airport (SCK) for the fastest access. Sacramento (SMF) and Oakland (OAK) are also great options if you’re coming from farther out. Either way, you’ll be cruising through farmland in no time.
- By Train: If you're coming during the week, the ACE train (Altamont Corridor Express) stops right in Lathrop/Manteca. I’ve taken it before to avoid traffic, and it’s a smooth ride with pretty views of the valley.
Where to Stay
- Hampton Inn & Suites Manteca – I’ve stayed here more than once—it’s clean, modern, and right next to shopping and restaurants. Plus, breakfast is included, which makes mornings easy if you’re traveling with family.
- Best Western Plus Executive Inn & Suites – This one’s super convenient if you’re driving in on Highway 99. The rooms are comfy, and the pool is a welcome bonus after a warm day exploring the area.
- Holiday Inn Express & Suites Manteca City Center – I’ve used this hotel when I needed something simple and central. It’s reliable, clean, and close to the freeway for quick trips in and out of town.
