If you’re searching for redwood forests, eco-conscious charm, and laid-back coastal vibes, I think you’ll love Arcata as much as I do. Tucked into California’s North Coast, this vibrant little college town blends natural beauty with a thoughtful, progressive spirit. Whether I’m hiking through towering redwoods, browsing handmade goods downtown, or catching live music in the plaza, I always leave Arcata feeling recharged and inspired. If you’re after a getaway that feels both relaxed and connected to nature, this is the spot.
Best Time to Visit
From my experience, the best time to visit Arcata is between May and October. That’s when the weather is mild, dry, and perfect for hiking, biking, and hitting the farmers market. You’ll still want to pack layers—coastal fog rolls in often—but I think it only adds to the town’s dreamy, moody charm.
How to Get There
- Driving in? I’ve done the road trip along U.S. Highway 101 and it’s gorgeous. Arcata is about 5.5 hours north of San Francisco and 2.5 hours south of the Oregon border—definitely worth the drive if you enjoy coastal scenery and forested routes.
- Flying? The easiest option is to land at California Redwood Coast–Humboldt County Airport (ACV). It’s just a 15-minute drive from downtown Arcata, and I’ve always found it convenient and low-key.
- Taking the bus? Redwood Transit System and Greyhound both make it pretty easy to get here. I’ve taken the RTS when hopping around Humboldt County—it’s a good option if you’re traveling without a car.
Where to Stay
- Hotel Arcata – I love staying right on the Plaza. This historic hotel puts you steps from shops, cafés, and nightlife—it’s got charm, character, and an unbeatable location.
- Best Western Arcata Inn – When I’m looking for comfort and convenience, this is my go-to. It’s close to the highway and has a heated pool and hot tub that feel great after a day of exploring.
- Redwood Coast Vacation Rentals – If you’re like me and want a more local, tucked-away experience, I recommend renting a cottage or eco-friendly guesthouse. You can stay in the forest or right by the beach—it’s peaceful, personal, and unforgettable.
