Rijeka is the third largest city in Croatia. It is one of the main seaports of Croatia and it lies on the Kvarner Bay which is part of the Adriatic Sea. The summer months of June, July, and August are the warmest months in Rijeka and this is the peak season when most tourists visit the city. It can be a little crowded and room rates are high. January is the coldest month of the year in Rijeka. Both the average high and the average low temperature are in the 40s, creating a range of 49°F (9°C) to 40°F (4°C).

In February, the average low temperature remains at 40°F (4°C). Meanwhile, the average high temperature sees a 2-degree increase to 51°F (10°C) for the last month of the winter season.

March sees a moderate amount of rain in Rijeka with a 14 mm precipitation rate. Both high and low temperature averages see a considerable increase with the high temperature average at 57°F (14°C). The low temperature average measures in at 46°F (8°C).

In April, the average low temperature sees a 4-degree increase to 50°F (10°C). Meanwhile, the average high temperature rises by 5-degrees to 62°F (17°C) for the second month of Rijeka’s spring season.

Rijeka Weather in May: One of the wetter months of the year comes in May for Rijeka as the precipitation rate measures in at 21 mm. Low temperature averages rise by nearly 10 degrees to 59°F (15°C) while the high temperature average shoots up to 72°F (22°C).

June brings even warmer temperatures to Rijeka as summer arrives. The average high temperature sees another significant increase to 79°F (26°C), while the average low temperature also sees an increase to 66°F (19°C).

In July, Rijeka expects just 4 mm of rainfall making it the driest month of the year. It is also the hottest month of the year with the average high temperature at 84°F (29°C). The low temperature average is 71°F (22°C).

August sees the average high temperature holding steady at 84°F (29°C). Meanwhile, the average low temperature decreases by 2 degrees to 69°F (21°C).

In September, the precipitation rate increases to 16 mm. With the arrival of autumn, the temperature averages continue to decrease with the high temperature average and the low temperature average measuring in at 74°F (23°C) and 61°F (16°C) respectively.

Rijeka Weather in October: There are considerable drops in temperature in October as the autumn season continues. The average high temperature decreases by 8 degrees to 66°F (19°C) while the average low temperature sinks to 55°F (13°C).

November is the last month of Rijeka’s autumn and brings with it high and low temperature averages that form a range of 57°F (14°C) to 48°F (9°C).

In December, the low temperature average decreases significantly to 41°F (5°C). The high temperature average decreases by an equal rate to 50°F (10°C). Meanwhile, Rijeka receives the highest precipitation rate of the year at 29 mm.

There’s no question that Rijeka is a beautiful and interesting city to see and visit. When it comes to the most ideal time to visit in terms of temperature and climate, May through August is the best time to go to Rijeka. If you plan on engaging in outdoor activities, it’s best to plan your trip between the months of June to September. During this time, you can explore the city on a bike ride or walk around the city center to explore the best of its museums, galleries and historic sights. The beaches are also incredible to visit from June to September.

There are several ways to arrive in Rijeka. If you are arriving by plane you will land at the Rijeka Airport near Omisalj on Krk Island. It is a small airport located about ten miles from the city center. Many people arrive in Rijeka by cruise ship: the boat harbor is conveniently located in the city center. This makes it easy for passengers to see the main sights in the center of Rijeka. There are long distance buses that many people use because they are efficient; they are in expensive; and they take you to the city center. You can also arrive by train or by car.

The Rijeka Airport is located on the island of Krk about 10 miles from Rijeka. The island is connected to the mainland by a bridge and it takes about 30 minutes from the airport to the center of the city. There are several ways to get from the airport to the city. Airport buses leave for the city approximately 30 minutes after flights land at the airport. Taxis wait outside of the terminal and this is another option to get into the city. If you are interested in driving, there are several car rental agencies that are located at the airport.

Rijeka has an excellent public transportation system: there are many buses with routes that extend around the city and depart approximately every 15 minutes. You have your choice of individual fares or weekly tickets: the buses use a zone-based system. This is an efficient, comfortable, reliable, and affordable way to see the attractions in Rijeka. There is another bus system that is geared specifically towards visitors. It is called the TouRist Bus and comes with narration in eight different languages: these narrations point out the main attractions in Rijeka and explain the significance of the sights. They are colorful double-decker buses and fares are reasonable.

There are several other ways to explore Rijeka. The train station and the bus station are located in the city center as are many hotels. One of the best ways to visit Rijeka is by walking from you city center hotel. Many of the main tourist attractions are within walking distance: there are beaches, museums, restaurants, galleries, and many historic sights. There are some hills, but reaching the top is worth it: there are wonderful views of the city and the bay. Riding a bicycle is another great way to see the city. Many of the restaurants offer freshly caught fish and seafood. Pizza restaurants are also popular especially for visitors on the run who want a quick meal. Some of the good seafood restaurants include Konoba Feral, Restaurant Gardens, Restaurant Molo Longo, Zlatna Skojka: they serve both fish and seafood. There are also quite a few restaurants that specialize in serving ethnic cuisine. Restaurant Asia, Restaurant Peking Wok, and Restaurant Peking serve good Chinese food; Italian food is the speciality at Bistro Pizzeria Maslina and Restaurant Spagho; and Mexican Cantina Bodega serves Mexican Food. Municipium Restaurant-Tavern is a popular restaurant serving traditional fare that uses fresh local ingredients.

Shoppers are treated to a variety of shopping experiences in Rijeka. Tower Center Rijeka is a large shopping mall with shops, restaurants, a huge supermarket, and an entertainment complex. There are more than 50 different shops located on three floors at the Western Commercial Center. Ri Department Store is one of the oldest shopping centers in Rijeka: it was built in 1974, but don’t let the age of the building stop you from exploring the shops. In addition to shopping malls, there are shops that are easy to find in the center of the city. These shops sell a huge variety of goods including antiques, works of art, handicrafts, books, souvenirs, and gifts.

Rijeka and the surrounding areas and countryside are picturesque and are appealing for those wanting to get married somewhere special. Foreigners are permitted to get married in Croatia and the weddings are legally binding. There is a fair amount of paperwork, but you do not have to be in Croatia for a set amount of time before you can apply for a marriage license. After going through the paperwork and getting the license, it’s time to find your special wedding venue. Hotels include the Grand Hotel Bonavia and the Hotel Jadran. But don’t limit your search to hotels. There are so many spectacular outdoor locations at the top of the hills with unforgettable views.

Hotel room rates do not vary during the year except at Carnival time: if your visit coincides with Carnival, make sure to book your accommodations as far in advance as you can. Some of the hotels include the Grand Hotel Bonavia, a historic and elegant hotel that dates back to 1876. The Continental Hotel is a huge building in the heart of the city, located on the bridge over the Rjecina River. Rijeka offers alternatives to hotels such as bed and breakfasts like the B&B Riva Rooms. There are also many apartments from which to choose as well as inexpensive hotels.
