Looking for sports, culture, and good old Midwest charm? Let me tell you why I keep coming back to Indianapolis. After 25 years as a travel writer, I’ve seen plenty of cities—but Indy has a way of blending big-event energy with small-town friendliness that keeps winning me over. Whether I’m exploring museums, catching a game, or walking along the canal at sunset, I always find something new to love. And if you're craving a city that mixes racing history with a walkable, scenic downtown, you’re going to feel right at home here too.

Indianapolis, IN Highlights:

  • Tour the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum – Even if you're not a die-hard racing fan, you’ll get goosebumps standing where legends made history. I always recommend this as a must-do.
  • Walk or paddle the Indianapolis Canal Walk – I’ve kayaked here before and it’s pure serenity in the middle of the city. You can stroll, rent a pedal boat, or just sit and watch the world float by.
  • Visit the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis – I’ve brought friends here with kids, and honestly, even as an adult, I had a blast. It’s massive, creative, and full of “wow” moments for all ages.
  • Explore White River State Park – Whenever I need some green space, this is where I head. You’ll find trails, museums, and the zoo all within walking distance of downtown.
  • Catch a Colts, Pacers, or Indians game – I’ve caught games in all three stadiums—each has its own flavor, and the local energy is contagious. If you’re a sports fan, you’ll love the vibe.

Best Time to Visit Indianapolis, IN

I always recommend visiting from May through October. That’s when the city is buzzing with festivals, concerts, and big events—especially the Indy 500 in May, which you’ve got to experience at least once. In the fall, the air gets crisp and the trees light up with color—it’s a great time to explore parks or catch a football game.

How to Get to Indianapolis, IN

  • If you are traveling by car: I’ve driven in from several nearby states—Indy’s right at the crossroads of I-65, I-70, and I-74, which makes road-tripping a breeze.
  • By air: Flying into Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is easy. I’m always impressed by how clean and efficient it is, and it’s just a short ride to downtown.
  • By train or bus: Amtrak and Greyhound both roll into Union Station, which puts you right in the heart of the city. If you’re coming from nearby cities, it’s a super convenient option.

Where to Stay in Indianapolis, IN

  • JW Marriott Indianapolis – I stayed here during a summer event and loved the skyline views. You’ll be steps from White River State Park, and the Convention Center is connected—super convenient.
  • The Alexander – This artsy downtown hotel is one of my favorites. The modern vibe, creative décor, and cocktail bar make it a stylish retreat after a day of exploring.
  • Ironworks Hotel Indy – If you want something a little off the beaten downtown path, this boutique hotel has industrial charm and is near great shopping and dining. I always enjoy the cozy yet upscale atmosphere here.
