Fralin Museum of Art

The Fralin Museum of Art in Charlottesville is dedicated to showcasing a collection of over 14,000 works which include African art, American Indian art, and European and American painting, and photography. Previously known as the University of Virginia Art Museum, the Fralin is situated in the historic Thomas H. Bayly Building on Rugby Road at the University of Virginia and is just minutes away from the University Rotunda. It also presents a range of temporary and traveling exhibitions throughout the year and serves as a teaching museum for academic departments in the university, as well as offering several community outreach programs.

History


Designed by Edmund S.Campbell and housed in the Thomas H. Bayly Memorial Building, the FralinMuseum of Art was opened to the public in 1935, however, closed for the duration of World War II and later reopened in 1946. After several changes and refurbishments, the Museum has built an impressive collection of pieces through gifts and purchases, including 17th century French and Flemish tapestries,Old Master and modern drawings and prints, and two Rodin sculptures. The Fralin Museum of Art features a permanent collection, as well as temporary and traveling exhibitions throughout the year. Current exhibitions include ‘TheGreat War: Printmakers of World War I from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts,' ‘New Acquisitions: Photography', and ‘Jean Arp – Oriforme.'The Joanne B. Robinson Object Study Gallery is home to more than 140 objects, including ancient Mediterranean coins,ancient pre-Columbian ceramics, Chinese bronzes, ceramics and sculpture, glass and marble sculpture, and African masks.

Education

The Fralin Museum of Art is dedicated toeducating the community and providing opportunities to study and learn about the value and role art has to play in society. The Fralin offers a variety of educational programs, talks and lectures, workshops, special tours and family programs across a broad range of art-related topics.One of the Museum's top programs is the Writer's Eye, a long-standing annual literary competition that challenges writers of all ages to use visual art as inspiration for the creation of original poetry and prose. Another favorite program is Family Art Jams, which presents age-appropriate opportunities for children to experience current exhibitions, while other programs such as Eyes on Art, Fun for the Young, and Lunchtime Talks never fail to please children and adults alike. The Fralin Museum of Art is located in the Thomas H. Bayly Building on Rugby Road at the University of Virginia and is open Tuesday through Sunday with free admission to the public. Parking is available on Bayly Drive, directly behind the Museum, and on Rugby Road in the A6 lot next to Madison Bowl, and the Museum is fully accessible to individuals with disabilities.

Tours

The Fralin Museum of Art offers interactive docent-led tours to groups of all ages, which explore the works on view and encourage dialogue about them. Tours are led by graduate art students, Museum staff and curators and tours can be pre-arranged to provide more information and historical context on certain exhibitions and works if required. Tours at the Fralin include Writer's Eye Tours, special K–12 student and school group tours, community group tours, and university course visits.Saturday Special Tours are held on the last Saturday of each month and involve informal presentations on aspects of the Museum's current collections and special exhibitions. Special lectures and guest talks also take place throughout the year at the Museum, the dates of which can be checked on the website.
