Weekend Getaways in Delaware
Searching for the best weekend getaways in Delaware? Well, you are in the right place! I love Delaware beaches, while my husband loves visiting historic spots, so we've done both while living on the East Coast. Here are some of the most unique getaways that I think you’ll love for your next 48 hour weekend trip.
The Bellmoor Inn and Spa, Rehoboth Beach
Want to spend a weekend on the beach? We discovered the most incredible hidden gem just two blocks from the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk.
I thought that The Bellmoor Inn and Spa was one of the best weekend getaways in Delaware when I moved to the East Coast. Why? First, there is the location which allows you to go swimming as much as you like. Secondly, I loved the outdoor pool which lets you relax surrounded by a garden.
At The Bellmoor, you can stay in a room that's absolutely comfortable with stylish décor, and a private balcony.
Wondering what to do beyond the beach? If you want a workout, you can hike or bike at Delaware Seashore State Park. Or go fishing and dolphin watching. You can also learn about local history at the Rehoboth Beach Museum and watch shows at the Rehoboth Beach Bandstand.
For me, The Bellmoor Inn and Spa is one of my favorite weekend getaways in Delaware when we are in the mood for relaxing beaches and history.
A downside? I have to warn you that parking in Rehoboth was stressful. Luckily, you can reach most areas on foot from the inn.
What I loved best:
My favorite highlight was the spa, where I had a sugar scrub after we got back from the beach.
Hotel Du Pont, Wilmington - 1.5 hours by train from NYC
This is one of my absolute favorite weekend getaways in Delaware because it made me feel transported back in time.
My husband surprised me with an anniversary trip to Wilmington, DE and it quickly became one of my favorite historic hotels. Why? First off, I love that it opened in 1913 and still carries all the glamour of the Gilded Age. It truly feels timeless and luxurious.
In addition, the lobby is absolutely stunning, with gilded ceilings, hand-carved woodwork, and chandeliers that made my arrival feel like stepping into a different era.
We boarded Amtrak’s Acela from New York's Penn Station to Wilmington, a smooth 1.5-hour ride for about $58 one way. The train pulled right into downtown Wilmington so it was easy to catch a taxi to the hotel from there.
Our room for two days was spacious and refined, with plush bedding, modern touches, and classic décor. You can trust that Hotel Du Pont is a special place to stay because it was named one of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Hotels in the USA”.
Best of all, there are heaps of unique things just steps from the hotel! Don't miss visiting the Delaware Art Museum, exploring the Riverfront, touring historic sites like the Nemours Estate and the Hagley Museum.
If you are in the mood for enjoying the outdoors, head to Brandywine Creek State Park. For a romantic evening out, we loved catching a show at the Grand Opera House.
What I loved best:
For me, Hotel Du Pont is one of the best weekend getaways in Delaware. My personal highlight was our dinner one night at the hotel’s French-inspired signature restaurant Le Cavalier at the Green Room. I had amazing Mezze rigatoni ($23) and my husband had the Short Rib Bourguignon ($38). I have to warn you that you have to book your table early on weekends and holidays!

The Bay Resort Motel
This is one of my favorite coastal hideaways, and it’s easily one of the best underrated spots for a relaxing, cheap weekend getaway by the water. I instantly thought our journey was worth it!
I love that it sits right on the bay, offering peaceful views and a quieter atmosphere compared to the livelier oceanfront just a short walk away.
From Washington, D.C., I drove about 2.5 hours east to Dewey Beach. Known for its laid-back vibe and live music scene, Dewey feels like the more easygoing cousin to Rehoboth just up the road.
The Bay Resort Motel feels like a hidden gem, with a laid-back vibe that makes it perfect for both romantic escapes and casual family vacations.
My favorite part was sitting out on the private balcony, watching the sunset over the bay—it felt like the best way to end each day.
I found our room for two days simple yet comfortable, with everything I needed for a relaxing beach stay, including our own kitchenette where we prepare some of our own meals.
For couples, The Bay Resort is a romantic option, with cozy accommodations and tranquil water views that create the perfect atmosphere.
Families will also love the pool, easy beach access, and walkable location to Dewey’s restaurants and attractions.
I especially enjoyed the private pier, which was ideal for morning coffee, crabbing, or just soaking up the quiet beauty of the bay.
For me, The Bay Resort Motel is my favorite kind of Dewey Beach getaway, where comfort, convenience, and waterfront affordability come together for a memorable escape.
What I loved best:
My personal highlight was the location just steps to the beach on one side and the bay on the other, giving me the best of both worlds.
Hotel Blue
This place is one of my favorite boutique stays and I think it's one of the best weekend getaways in Delaware. Why? I love that it blends coastal charm with modern design, making it feel like an underrated treasure compared to bigger chain hotels in the area.
The hotel has a chic, adults-only atmosphere, which makes it perfect for couples looking for a romantic and relaxing escape.
I found the rooms spacious and thoughtfully designed, with plush bedding, fireplaces, whirlpool tubs, and private balconies that made the stay feel luxurious.
For couples, Hotel Blue is one of the best romantic spots in Lewes, offering privacy, elegance, and an intimate setting close to the beach.
Families may prefer larger resorts, but for a cozy and upscale adult getaway, this hotel is my favorite choice. I especially loved its location—just steps from downtown Lewes, with charming shops, restaurants, and the historic district all within walking distance.
The staff added to the experience with warm hospitality and personal touches that made me feel right at home. Hotel Blue is my favorite kind of getaway, where modern comfort, coastal beauty, and small-town charm come together in one unforgettable stay.
A downside? I liked the boutique vibe and rooftop pool, but the small size meant fewer amenities. When the hotel filled up, it felt more limited compared to larger resorts.
What I loved best:
My personal highlight was the rooftop pool and sundeck, where I could soak up the sun while enjoying views of the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.
For me, Hotel Blue is one of the best spots in Delaware, my favorite escape I can’t wait to return to!
