Sault Ste. Marie is unique in that it straddles the Michigan/Ontario border, where Lake Superior meets Lake Huron – the two halves of the city are linked by an international bridge. Sault Ste Marie is about 5 hours from Detroit, which means this is more of a weekend or overnight destination rather than a day trip. There are many historic sites and building to admire in downtown Sault Ste. Marie including the River of History Museum, the Alberta House Art Center and historic Water Street where you can tour the John Johnston Home which dates back to 1793. For something a little different you can tour the locks of the St. Mary’s river on a Locks Boat Tour – a great maritime adventure.
