Magnuson Park is a charming 150-acre public park in Seattle's Sand Point neighborhood, commonly referred to as Sand Point Park.
The park, which was originally established as Carkeek Park in 1900, was home to the Naval Station Puget Sound throughout the early 20th century until its decommissioning in 1970. Large portions of the former airfield were given to both the City of Seattle and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
In 1977, the public park lands were rebranded as Magnuson Park, named in honor of United States Senator Warren Magnuson. Today, the park is Seattle's second-largest public park, offering amenities such as sporting fields, a boat launch, a community center and garden, and a seasonal swimming beach.
The Junior League of Seattle Children's Playground, Seattle's largest children's playground, was constructed entirely using a volunteer force and designed with the aid of children's advisory teams.
