If you’re after small-town charm with big energy and gorgeous Mt. Rainier views, let me tell you—you’ll love Puyallup, Washington. I’ve visited for both quick day trips and weekend getaways, and each time I’m surprised by how much this town packs in. Tucked into the Puyallup Valley, it offers easy access to Seattle and Tacoma, yet feels like its own peaceful world. Between farmers markets, riverside trails, and the unforgettable fairgrounds, you’ll find more than enough to explore—and plenty of warm, local hospitality to go with it.

Puyallup, WA Highlights:

  • Traveling with family? I highly recommend the Washington State Fair. It’s one of the biggest in the U.S., and I’ve spent entire days there riding rides, eating too many fair snacks, and catching live music under the stars. If you time your visit right, it’s a can’t-miss experience.
  • Craving fresh air? I love walking or biking along the Riverwalk Trail. It’s scenic, peaceful, and winds right through town—perfect for an early morning stroll or a family bike ride past murals and green spaces.
  • Got little ones with energy to burn? Bradley Lake Park is one of those places that always delivers. I’ve picnicked here by the lake, rented paddleboats, and watched kids go wild on the playground. It’s low-key but perfect for a sunny afternoon.
  • Up for an adventure? Puyallup is one of my favorite basecamps for a day trip to Mt. Rainier National Park. It’s only about 1.5 hours away, and I’ve done both quick hikes and full scenic drives—absolutely worth carving out the time.
  • Love vintage finds? Downtown Puyallup is full of fun antique shops and boutique spots. I’ve found everything from handmade candles to mid-century furniture here, and the walkable layout makes it easy to browse and explore at your own pace.

From all my visits, I’d say the sweet spot is May through October. Spring and summer bring sunshine, farmers markets, and prime hiking conditions, while fall kicks off big events like the fair and Meeker Days. I’ve been in both summer and early fall, and both times were packed with activity, color, and great weather.

  • By Car: I usually drive in from Seattle or Tacoma—it’s a quick trip, especially off WA-512. Puyallup is just 10 miles from Tacoma and around 35 from Seattle, depending on traffic.
  • By Train: I’ve taken the Sounder commuter rail to the Puyallup Station right downtown. It’s super convenient, especially if you’re coming in for a fair event or just want to skip parking headaches.
  • By Air: Flying into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA) puts you just 30–40 minutes away. I usually rent a car at SEA, and the drive into Puyallup is smooth and scenic.
