The University of Bonn (Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn) was established in 1818 and is one of the largest universities in Germany. Named after the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm III, the main building of the University is the Prince-Electors' Palace, which was once the residence of the Prince-Electors of Cologne. Today, the historic building houses the Faculty of Arts and is surrounded by beautifully manicured gardens and grounds known as the Hofgarten, which are protected as historic monuments.
