Review & Frequenly Asked Questions:

The first temple visitors see when they arrive to Athens is the Parthenon, perched high on Acropolis Hill and dominating the entire landscape.

It is probably the most famous and most beautiful of all Greek ancient temples. Dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena Parthenos, the temple was built in the 5th century BC by the Athenian statesman Pericles, designed by the architects Ictinus and Callicrates, and supervised by the sculptor Phidias, who also created the great gold and ivory statue of Athena. The temple was completed in 438. The Parthenon has suffered a certain amount of damage over the centuries and has lost most of its sculptures, but most of its structure has remained intact to this day.
