The Panathenaic Stadium, also called Kallimarmaro or “beautiful marble,” is a multipurpose stadium in Athens, Greece, made entirely out of marble.

It was originally a racecourse built in?330 BC by the Athenian statesman Lykourgos for the Panathenaic Games, and the Athenian Roman senator Herodes Atticus reconstructed it in marble in 144 AD. It had a capacity of 50,000 seats. After being excavated in 1869, the stadium hosted the Zappas Olympics in 1870 and in 1875 as well as the opening and closing of the first modern Olympic Games in 1896. The stadium was used for many different purposes in the 20th century and was the venue of the 2004 Olympic Games.
