The Numismatic Museum of Athens houses one of the largest collections of ancient and modern coins in the world.

The museum is located in the Palace of Ilion, the mansion of the famed archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. The collection of coins was started by the government after Greece independence and was later enriched with donated, excavated, and purchased coins. The museum was established in 1838, about the same time as the National Archaeological Museum. The museum today has a collection of more than 600,000 objects – coins, medals, dies, standard masses, stamps, and other objects dating from the 14th century BC to today. Some of the most important objects are coins from the 6th century BC until the 5th century AD, such as coins from the Greek Poleis as well as the Hellenistic and Roman periods.
