An annual celebration and wreath laying ceremony is held at the Columbus Memorial Statue, which is located at Union Station in Washington DC. The wreath laying ceremony is attended by ambassadors from Spain and Italy as well as the general public, and the day has many performances from various groups and organizations. The Knights of Columbus are in attendance, as well as the U.S. Marine Band, who play various patriotic tunes throughout the event. There is often a U.S. Marine Color Guard performance, and it is traditional for U.S. Park Rangers to give speeches during this event as well. While not all D.C. attractions will stay open, there is plenty to see and do.
