Dreaming of red rock landscapes, secret canyons, and the kind of adventure you’ll remember forever? Then I say make your way to Kanab. I’ve wandered this Southern Utah gem more than once, and every time, it delivers something epic. Nestled near the Arizona border, Kanab is surrounded by some of the most jaw-dropping national parks in the Southwest—Zion, Bryce, and the Grand Canyon North Rim are all within reach. But what I really love is how Kanab holds its own, with stunning scenery, a welcoming spirit, and a little Wild West magic everywhere you turn.

What I Think You’ll Love in Kanab

  • For Adventurers: If you’re lucky enough to score a permit, The Wave is pure surrealism in sandstone. And Buckskin Gulch? I’ve hiked part of it and it’s easily one of the most dramatic slot canyons I’ve ever seen—just be sure to check the weather first.
  • For Animal Lovers: Visiting Best Friends Animal Sanctuary was a highlight for me. Touring the refuge, meeting rescued dogs and cats—it’s heartwarming, peaceful, and gives back to an amazing cause.
  • For Photographers: I’ve shot light beams and red rock curves in Peek-A-Boo Slot Canyon—this hidden gem rivals the more famous canyons without the crowds. You’ll get frame-worthy photos, I promise.
  • For Families: If you’re traveling with kids or just love playtime, don’t miss Coral Pink Sand Dunes. I sandboarded here at sunset, and you will not stop smiling. It's soft, stunning, and only 30 minutes from town.
  • For History Buffs: You can step right into movie history at Little Hollywood. I toured the old sets and learned how Kanab earned its nickname—it’s a fun, quirky stop with real stories behind the scenes.

When I Recommend Going

I’ve found spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) to be the best times to explore Kanab. The weather’s perfect for hiking—warm days, cool nights, and golden desert light. Summer can be toasty, but if you head out early like I do, you’ll beat the heat. Winter is peaceful and ideal if you want fewer people and dreamier photo ops.

How I Usually Get to Kanab

  • By Car: I usually drive in via US-89. It’s about 1.5 hours from Page or Zion, and roughly 3.5 hours from Las Vegas. The drives themselves are scenic—I always pull over at least once to take it all in.
  • By Air: I’ve flown into St. George (SGU) and Page (PGA); both are about 90 minutes away and easy to navigate. If you want bigger airport options, Las Vegas or Salt Lake City work too—just give yourself more drive time.
  • By Tour or Shuttle: If you’re not driving, regional shuttles and guided tours can bring you right into Kanab and help you explore the parks without a car. I’ve seen visitors do this comfortably.

Where I’ve Stayed—and Think You’ll Love

  • With the Family: Hampton Inn Kanab – I recommend this one if you’re traveling with kids. It’s got a pool, free breakfast, and a great location for day trips to the parks.
  • For Couples: Canyons Boutique Hotel – I stayed here on a quiet weekend trip, and it was charming. Cozy rooms, great food, and you can walk to shops and cafes downtown.
  • For the Adventurous: BaseCamp 37° Glamping – I’ll never forget stargazing from a luxury tent out here. It’s off the grid, but incredibly comfortable. You’ll wake up to desert views and crisp air—it’s magical.
