Perfect Romantic Getaways in the Texas Hill Country
The Texas Hill Country is home to some of the best romantic getaways in the state, and it’s one of my favorite regions for couples looking to escape.

With rolling hills, charming small towns, and endless wineries, the Hill Country delivers the best mix of scenery, relaxation, and intimacy, along with unique and sometimes underrated spots that make every trip unforgettable.
I live close to Austin so I'm fortunate to be able to escape to the Hill Country often. You can choose cozy cottages, scenic vineyard stays, or boutique retreats. I have tried each style, and you can trust they make it easy to relax, sip, and unwind together.
Whether you’re sipping wine at the best vineyards in Fredericksburg, enjoying the unique riverfront charm of New Braunfels, or discovering the underrated beauty of Wimberley, the Hill Country has countless ways to spark romance.
The best part is the variety: boutique inns, cozy cabins, and breathtaking drives through the hills. Think quiet evenings with the best sunsets, unique stargazing opportunities, and underrated small towns where time slows down. These details are what make the Hill Country’s getaways both unique and some of the best in Texas.
With most destinations just an hour or two from Austin or San Antonio, it’s easy to plan the best kind of stress-free weekend. Whether you’re after luxury, rustic charm, or outdoor adventure, the Texas Hill Country offers the best settings to celebrate romance.
Which Hill Country escape will you choose? If you’re searching for the best mix of scenery, wine, and romance, these getaways deliver. They’re not just weekends away, they’re the best, sometimes underrated, always unique, and forever some of my favorite escapes in Texas.
Perfect Romantic Getaways in the Texas Hill Country

Lake Austin Spa Resort - Serenity on the Water
We drove just 30 minutes from our home in Austin out to Lake Austin Spa Resort, tucked along a quiet stretch of the Colorado River. Though only a short hop from the city, the 19-acre property feels worlds away. Once a humble fishing camp, it’s now one of the most celebrated destination spas in Texas.
We arrived just as the sun slipped behind the hills, and the lake turned the color of warm tea. I stood on the dock, the air soft with honeysuckle and cedar, and thought, “I could disappear into this.” Everything at Lake Austin Spa Resort moved gently, whispers, paddle strokes, the slow rustle of linen curtains.
What I Loved Most: Floating in the quiet pool after a morning massage, the only sound my breath and the birds in the reeds.
My highlights? We had grilled chicken seasoned with rosemary and lemon zest, simple, fragrant, with steam rising in curls above the plate. The vegetables were roasted until sweet and just soft enough, and dessert was a chilled peach soup that tasted like sunlight. Our room opened to the lake, and we left the doors cracked to hear the water at night.
Plan your stay:
- Location: ~30 minutes west of downtown Austin
- Vibe: Tranquil, lakeside, wellness-focused
- Best For: Couples needing deep rest, spa lovers
- Cost: Premium (rates include meals and activities)
- Don’t Miss: Hydrotherapy treatments, guided paddleboarding, lakeside yoga

Blair House Inn - Artistic Quiet in Wimberley
We drove about 50 minutes southwest (40 miles) from our home in Austin to Wimberley, a Hill Country town of around 3,000 people. Once a quiet ranching and trading post, Wimberley is now known for its artsy vibe and small-town charm. I wandered around the historic Wimberley Square with its galleries and boutiques, admired public art along the streets, and stopped by the Pioneer Town museum, a quirky re-creation of an 1800s frontier village.
Wimberley had a softness to it, mist clinging to the trees, silence stitched into the hills. At Blair House Inn, it felt like we’d stepped out of the world and into a painting. “This place doesn’t try to impress you,” I told my husband as we walked the gravel path to our suite. “It just waits for you to notice it.”
What I Loved Most: Waking up to birdsong and watercolor skies, then stepping out onto the porch with my hands wrapped around a warm mug.
My highlights? Breakfast was pecan waffles topped with fresh whipped cream and cinnamon butter, crisp at the edges, sweet and nutty in the middle. The bacon was thick-cut and smoky, and the coffee had that fresh-roast smell that made the whole room feel warmer. We spent the day wandering the gallery-like common areas, then sat beneath the oaks until the stars showed up.
Plan your stay:
- Location: In Wimberley, ~1 hour from Austin or San Antonio
- Vibe: Quiet, artistic, restorative
- Best For: Couples who love art, food, and slow mornings
- Cost: Moderate to upscale (breakfast included)
- Don’t Miss: Their gourmet cooking school, wine-paired dinners, hilltop views

Cotton Gin Village - Rustic Romance in Fredericksburg
We drove about 1.5 hours west (78 miles) from our home in Austin to Fredericksburg. During the day, I explored Fredericksburg’s German heritage downtown, visited the Pioneer Museum, and strolled along Main Street lined with 19th-century limestone buildings.
“It smells like cedar and something older,” I said as we stepped into our log cabin. The floor creaked softly beneath our feet, and the fireplace was already lit. At Cotton Gin Village, time felt slower, like it had thickened in the stone walls and decided to stay awhile.
What I Loved Most: Sitting by the fire in worn robes, sharing silence that didn’t need to be filled.
My highlights? Dinner next door at Cabernet Grill was grilled quail over roasted butternut squash, tender, rich, and kissed with smoke. The squash was caramelized and velvety, the kind of flavor that settles deep. We walked back under string lights and stars, the cold air sweet and still.
Plan your stay:
- Location: In Fredericksburg, ~1.5 hours west of Austin
- Vibe: Rustic, cozy, intimate
- Best For: Couples who love log cabins and quiet dinners
- Cost: Moderate to high (dinner not included)
- Don’t Miss: Dining at Cabernet Grill, evening strolls under lantern light

Creekhaven Inn - A Hidden Grove in Wimberley
We crossed a wooden footbridge shaded by cypress trees, and the world shifted. Creekhaven Inn felt tucked away from everything, like we’d been let in on a secret. I heard the soft rush of the creek below and thought, “This is what it feels like to breathe all the way in.”
What I Loved Most: The hammock under the trees, my husband’s hand in mine, and the hush of water smoothing the edges of the day.
My highlights? Breakfast was an herbed egg casserole, fluffy, sharp with cheddar, and just enough pepper, served with fresh strawberries and warm banana bread that smelled like cinnamon and home. We wandered the creek banks, watched deer slip between trees, and let time drift with the current.
Plan your stay at Creekhaven Inn:
- Location: In Wimberley, ~1 hour from Austin
- Vibe: Natural, serene, creekside escape
- Best For: Couples who want privacy, nature, and slow mornings
- Cost: Moderate (breakfast included)
- Don’t Miss: Creekside hammocks, in-room massage add-ons, wildflower spotting in spring

Cypress Valley Treehouses - Sleeping in the Canopy
High above the forest floor, we stepped onto the swinging bridge toward our treehouse. The air smelled like cedar and damp moss, and I remember thinking, “We’re in the kind of place you dream about as a kid, but now we get to stay.”
What I Loved Most: Lying in bed with the windows cracked open, listening to wind move through leaves like soft conversation.
My highlights? We brought takeout from a nearby food truck, brisket tacos still warm in foil, smoky and peppered, with sweet peach cobbler that tasted like summer. We ate on the deck under string lights while cicadas buzzed and the stars came out, one by one.
Plan your stay:
- Location: Near Spicewood, ~45 minutes west of Austin
- Vibe: Whimsical, adventurous, off-the-ground romance
- Best For: Couples who want something playful and private
- Cost: Moderate to high (varies by treehouse type)
- Don’t Miss: The swinging bridge walks, night swims in the natural pool, and watching fireflies from your deck

La Cantera Resort & Spa - Hilltop Calm Above the City
My husband and I drove about 1.5 hours south (80 miles) from our home in Austin to San Antonio, a city of 1.5 million where history and culture meet along the river. I toured the Alamo, the most famous of the five Spanish missions, and walked the Mission Reach Trail, which links these UNESCO World Heritage Sites along the San Antonio River. In the evening, we strolled along the lively River Walk, lined with cafés and mariachi music echoing off the stone bridges.
We floated in the infinity pool as the sun dipped behind the hills, the lights of San Antonio beginning to flicker below. I leaned back, eyes half closed, and thought, “We could stay here forever and still not take it all in.”
What I Loved Most: The feeling of being far away, while still so close to everything we left behind.
My highlights? After an afternoon at the spa, warm stones, hushed music, herbal oils, I ordered roasted chicken with wild mushrooms at the resort restaurant. The meat was tender and earthy, with just a brush of rosemary, and the mushrooms carried the deep scent of butter and thyme. We lingered on the terrace afterward, the sky wide and violet, the breeze carrying nothing but time.
Plan your stay:
- Location: In San Antonio, perched above the city
- Vibe: Polished, peaceful, indulgent
- Best For: Couples who want luxury with a view
- Cost: High-end (spa and dining extra)
- Don’t Miss: Adult-only infinity pool, full-service spa, sunset views over the Hill Country
