Want an outdoor adventure hub with small-town charm? I always tell people to head to Sandy, Oregon! I’ve used it as my base for Mt. Hood trips, forest hikes, and waterfall chasing more times than I can count. Nestled between Portland and the mountain, you’ll find that Sandy offers that perfect blend of fresh air, scenic beauty, and cozy community vibes. Whether you’re fueling up with coffee before a ski day or ending your hike with a local craft brew, I think you’ll love how easy it is to unwind here.

Sandy, OR Highlights:

  • Meinig Memorial Park: I like strolling through the forested trails here when I want a quick nature fix right in town. You’ll cross wooden bridges, hear birdsong, and find quiet corners to relax.
  • Sandy Ridge Trail System: If you love mountain biking like I do, this network is a dream. I’ve ridden some of the smoothest singletrack through the foothills of Mt. Hood here—it’s both fun and scenic.
  • Jonsrud Viewpoint: I never leave Sandy without stopping here. You’ll get panoramic views of Mt. Hood and the Sandy River Valley, and if you catch it at sunset—wow. Bring your camera!
  • Sandy Historical Museum: I popped in here on a rainy day and ended up learning so much about the area’s logging and pioneer history. It’s a small stop, but full of stories.
  • Mt. Hood Scenic Byway: This drive is one of my favorites in Oregon. You’ll start right in Sandy and wind your way toward Oregon’s tallest peak with stunning views the whole way.

Best Time to Visit Sandy, OR

I usually plan my visits between May and October—the weather’s perfect for hiking, biking, and exploring the byway. But if you’re into winter sports like I am, you’ll love coming in ski season too. Sandy makes a great stop before hitting the slopes at Mt. Hood.

How to Get to Sandy, OR

  • Driving in? I take U.S. Route 26—it’s a smooth 45-minute drive from Portland and just about an hour from Mt. Hood’s ski resorts. You’ll love the views as you get closer to the mountains.
  • Taking public transit? The Mt. Hood Express is a great option. I’ve used it to get from Sandy to Timberline Lodge—it’s budget-friendly and stops at some great places along the way.
  • Flying in? I always fly into Portland International Airport (PDX). From there, it’s about 45 minutes by car to Sandy, and I’ve found rentals and shuttles to be easy and convenient.

Where to Stay in Sandy, OR

  • Best Western Sandy Inn: I’ve stayed here when I needed something convenient and comfortable. It’s right off the highway, has a pool, and the free breakfast hits the spot before a day on the trails.
  • Sandy Salmon Bed & Breakfast: If you’re looking for something quieter, I absolutely loved this riverside B&B. It’s peaceful, charming, and great if you’re into fishing or just want to unwind surrounded by nature.
  • Campgrounds near Sandy: I’ve camped at Marmot and Mt. Hood Village RV Resort, and both were great. If you’re like me and love falling asleep to the sounds of the forest, this is the way to go. Tollgate is another solid choice if you’re heading up the mountain.
