Weekend getaways from New York City are some of the most unique escapes in the Northeast. They’re easily among my favorite ways to recharge from the city’s nonstop energy. I’m an expert on New York because I lived there for 10 years.
With beaches, mountains, historic towns, and vineyards all within a few hours, NYC offers some of the best weekend trips for every kind of traveler. I’ve been covering trips from NYC for 30 years, which makes me a true expert.
What makes these getaways so special is the variety. You can head north to the Catskills for cozy cabins and hiking, east to Long Island for sandy shores and wine country, or explore the underrated charm of Hudson Valley towns filled with art, food, and history.

We drove northwest from Newark in about an hour, the highway giving way to wooded hills and quiet valleys before reaching Hamburg.
The Crystal Springs Resort in New Jersey is one of my favorite East Coast getaways because it truly has something for everyone—whether you’re planning a romantic escape, a family vacation, or a relaxing weekend with friends.
Nestled in the rolling hills of Sussex County, this resort feels like a hidden gem just a short drive from New York City, yet it feels worlds away once you arrive.
What I love most is the variety.
The resort is actually made up of two hotels—Grand Cascades Lodge and Minerals Hotel—each with its own vibe. Grand Cascades is luxurious and romantic, with stunning mountain views, elegant suites, and the famous Biosphere pool complex, which feels like a tropical oasis year-round.
Minerals Hotel, on the other hand, is perfect for families, with easy access to hiking, indoor and outdoor pools, and tons of kid-friendly activities.
Dining here is a treat too. From casual cafés to refined restaurants featuring farm-to-table cuisine and award-winning wine, there’s something for every mood.
My favorite experience was enjoying a romantic dinner at Restaurant Latour, which has an incredible wine cellar and an intimate atmosphere.
Beyond the accommodations and dining, Crystal Springs is packed with activities. Guests can golf on championship courses, explore hiking trails, indulge in spa treatments, or simply unwind by the pool.
In the winter, it’s also close to Mountain Creek for skiing and snowboarding, making it a true year-round destination.
For me, Crystal Springs Resort is one of the best underrated escapes in New Jersey—luxurious, versatile, and always memorable.

Historic halls and Hudson River views from The Thayer Hotel - 1.5 hours from NYC
The Thayer Hotel at West Point is one of my favorite historic getaways just 1.5 hours from New York City.
Perched high above the Hudson River, this underrated gem combines rich military history with classic elegance, making it an ideal spot for a romantic weekend or even a fun family escape.
From the moment you arrive, the atmosphere feels special.
The castle-like stone architecture and views of the Hudson set the tone, and stepping inside feels like walking into a piece of American history.

We drove east from New York City in about two hours, the road narrowing as it stretched onto Long Island’s North Fork.

Tucked among rows of vineyards in the charming town of Mattituck, it feels like an intimate escape that’s both rustic and elegant—perfect for wine lovers or anyone craving a serene retreat.
What I love most about Rose Hill is how it blends a working vineyard with a cozy inn. The property is stunning, with sprawling vines, a historic farmhouse, and plenty of spots to sit back with a glass of wine and just take in the scenery.
The tasting room is warm and inviting, and guests can enjoy complimentary wine flights, which makes the whole experience feel extra special.
The inn itself is small and boutique, with only a handful of rooms, which adds to its private and personal feel.

We drove southeast from Boston in about an hour and a half, the road crossing bridges over wide stretches of water before opening onto Cape Cod.
Stepping into The Dan'l Webster Inn & Spa was like a warm hug from history. The rooms creaked in the best way, and every corner seemed to tell a story.

Located right in the heart of Cape Cod’s oldest town, this historic inn is a true hidden gem that combines colonial charm with modern comfort.
What I love most is the sense of history you feel the moment you arrive.
The inn has been welcoming guests for over 300 years, and its elegant décor—think wood-beamed ceilings, antique furnishings, and fireplaces—creates an atmosphere that’s warm, inviting, and unforgettable.
Yet, despite its history, the inn offers all the best modern amenities, from luxury suites with whirlpool tubs to the tranquil Beach Plum Spa.
Dining here was a highlight for me. The restaurant serves creative New England cuisine, and enjoying dinner by the firelit conservatory or in the candlelit dining room felt incredibly romantic.
My favorite dish was the fresh local seafood, paired perfectly with a glass of Cape Cod wine.

Gilded Age grandeur in Vermont at The Inn at Shelburne Farms - 5 hours
We drove south from Burlington in just fifteen minutes, the road hugging Lake Champlain before opening into the small town of Shelburne.
We arrived through a tunnel of trees, and The Inn at Shelburne Farms appeared like something out of a novel. It felt timeless. We walked the farm trails, sat by the lake, and soaked in the golden light of an unhurried world. I remember thinking, “This is Vermont at its most graceful.”
What I love most is the setting. The inn is part of a 1,400-acre working farm and nonprofit focused on sustainability, so everywhere you look there are rolling pastures, gardens, and sweeping views of Lake Champlain with the Adirondacks rising beyond.
It’s the kind of place where mornings begin with a quiet walk along the shoreline, and evenings end with sunsets that take your breath away.
The restaurant sources much of its produce, dairy, and meat directly from the farm. My favorite meal was a simple breakfast of farm-fresh eggs and homemade bread, which tasted unforgettable in its freshness.

Upstate calm with a boutique soul at Hasbrouck House
Hasbrouck House is perfect for a romantic weekend escape for couples looking to get awat.
Just about two hours from NYC, it feels worlds away with its mix of history, style, and laid-back luxury. What I love most is the setting.
The inn is housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century Dutch Colonial stone mansion surrounded by lush grounds, century-old trees, and a serene pond.
It has all the charm of a historic estate but with a fresh, modern design that makes it feel chic and welcoming.
The rooms are elegant yet comfortable, with thoughtful details like plush bedding, vintage-inspired décor, and spa-like bathrooms.
My favorite touch was how each space felt unique—no cookie-cutter hotel rooms here.
It’s the kind of place where you want to curl up with a book by the fireplace or open the windows to enjoy crisp Hudson Valley air.
Dining was another highlight. Butterfield, the on-site restaurant, serves seasonal farm-to-table dishes that showcase local ingredients.
I especially loved lingering over dinner with a glass of wine before wandering outside to sit by the fire pit under the stars.

A Tiny House Resort, New York
A Tiny House Resort in the Catskills is one of my favorite underrated spots for a weekend getaway, perfect if you’re looking for something unique, cozy, and a little bit magical.
Tucked along the Catskill Creek in South Cairo, this hidden gem is all about slowing down and enjoying the simple things in life, whether you’re planning a romantic retreat or a fun family escape.
What I love most is how each tiny house is thoughtfully designed. The spaces may be small, but they’re incredibly charming, with smart layouts, comfy beds, full kitchens, and big windows that frame the natural beauty outside.
My favorite part was sipping morning coffee on the deck, listening to the creek flow by—it felt peaceful and grounding.

Walk to the beach from Shelter Island House in New York - 2 hours 30 minutes
We took the ferry from Greenport, the ride just a few minutes across the Peconic Bay before landing on Shelter Island.

Just about 2.5 hours from New York City, it feels like a true retreat, tucked away on quiet Shelter Island where life moves at a slower pace.
What I love most is the atmosphere. The inn has a chic, coastal vibe with bright, airy interiors, crisp linens, and thoughtful details that make every room feel inviting.
My favorite part was lounging by the pool with a cocktail in hand—it felt worlds away from the city yet still effortlessly sophisticated.

Skaneateles Quiet & Vintage Grace at 34 State
We drove west from Syracuse in about half an hour, the road dipping into rolling hills before the clear blue waters of Skaneateles Lake came into view. The town felt bright and welcoming along the shoreline.
34 State Historic Luxury Suites in Skaneateles is one of my favorite hidden gems in Upstate New York, perfect for a romantic escape or a cozy weekend getaway.
Nestled just steps from the village’s charming shops, restaurants, and pristine lakefront, this boutique inn feels both intimate and indulgent.
What truly charms me is staying in a beautifully restored historic home, built in 1834 and once the residence of artist John D. Barrow.
It elegantly blends antiques, designer décor, and museum-quality artwork—including one original painting in each suite.
The suites themselves are spacious and serene, complete with plush bedding, soundproof comfort, kitchenettes, and garden or village views that make waking up feel special.

The inn’s location couldn’t be better—just a block from Skaneateles Lake and the vibrant village center, yet tucked away on a peaceful, tree-lined street.
