The Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels has been serving the spiritual needs of the Olean community since the first wooden “shanty” church was built in 1852. At that time the funds to build the church ($300) were collected from railroad workers. The church you see today was constructed in the Gothic Revival style between 1913 and 1915. Later, beautiful stained-glass windows were added. Between 1984 and 1990 a large restoration program uncovered beautiful paintings in the sanctuary which have been restored. Visitors are welcome to come and admire the beautiful interior of the basilica (free 45min tours focusing on the art and architecture of the basilica are available) or to join the community in celebrating Mass.
