Olean owes its existence to oil and timber. Olean was the main timber town in the region between 1830 and 1850 and then became an important oil storage and refining center after oil was discovered in the last quarter of the 19th century. The population of the town almost doubled around that time. Today visitors can anticipate enjoying the great outdoors as they walk/hike the beautiful Allegany River Valley Trail or explore the Rock City Park. If you love history and architecture you can visit the lovely Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels or take a stroll through Oak Hill Park Historic District to see a collection of late 19th century homes, business and religious buildings.
