If you’re dreaming of a cozy small-town escape in Upstate New York, let me introduce you to Glens Falls. I found this gem tucked between the Adirondacks and the Hudson River, and now I always recommend it when friends want a mix of culture and nature. You can spend your days wandering through art galleries, catching live music, exploring historic sites, or heading outdoors for a scenic hike. Whether you’re traveling solo or bringing the whole family, Glens Falls has that just-right feeling of relaxed charm with plenty to explore.

Best Time to Visit

I’ve visited in just about every season, but if I had to choose, I’d say May through October is the sweet spot. You’ll enjoy great weather for walking downtown, hitting a trail, or taking a short drive to Lake George. Spring and summer are ideal for festivals and patio dining, while fall brings out the most beautiful foliage I’ve seen in the region.

How to Get There

  • If you’re traveling by car: I usually drive up via I-87, the Adirondack Northway. It’s about 3.5 hours north of NYC and only an hour from Albany. The route itself is scenic—especially once you’re closer to the Adirondacks.
  • By Bus: I’ve taken Adirondack Trailways before, and it’s a reliable option. You can catch it from major cities like Albany or New York City, and you’ll be dropped off close to downtown Glens Falls.
  • By Train: If you prefer the train, I recommend Amtrak to Fort Edward, which is only 10 minutes away. I’ve used this route along the Adirondack or Ethan Allen Express lines and then grabbed a short cab ride into town.

Where to Stay

  • The Queensbury Hotel – I stayed here on my first visit, and honestly, it set the tone. This historic hotel is right in the heart of downtown and has a grand lobby that makes you feel like you’ve stepped back in time—but with all the modern touches you’d want. You’ll love the location too—everything’s walkable.
  • Fairfield Inn & Suites – When I’ve traveled with family or needed something simple and reliable, this was a great pick. It’s close to shopping and restaurants, and the rooms are clean, quiet, and comfortable.
  • Baymont by Wyndham – On a tighter budget? I’ve stayed here when I wanted to be close to both downtown and Lake George without spending too much. It’s basic, but it gets the job done—and the location is great for day trips.
