Manteo is a lovely coastal North Carolina town that is home to the preserved Fort Raleigh National Historic SIte, which preserves an historic earthen fort that is connected to the 1587 first English settlement in North America. The lovely North Carolina Aquarium, located on nearby Roanoke Island, showcases exhibits related to the marine life of the Outer Banks and the Gulf Stream. The historic Roanoke Marshes Lighthouse is the only preserved in-shore lighthouse in the Outer Banks, open to the public for guided tours and photo opportunities. Couples can stroll through the gorgeous 10-acre Elizabethan Gardens as part of self-guided tours or enjoy performances of the renowned Lost Colony Outdoor Drama, America's longest-running outdoor symphonic drama. The city's downtown district offers several blocks of charming independent boutiques, gift shops, and delicious upscale restaurants.
