Lake Lure is one of North Carolina's most beautiful manmade lakes, located within the foothills of the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains approximately half an hour from Asheville. The Hickory Nut Gorge lake has been featured in a number of major motion pictures, including the hit films Dirty Dancing, Thunder Road, and The Last of the Mohicans. Couples can stroll along the lake's beautiful boardwalk or enjoy swimming at its public beachfront, which is home to a water slide and water park offering thrills for visitors of all ages. Hiking trails abound, including the 1.5-mile Rumbling Bald Trail loop at Chimney Rock State Park. Nearby, lovely shops and restaurants populate the village of Chimney Rock, which is also home to a town marina, public park, and the nine-hole Lake Lure Golf Club.
