Flat Rock is a delightful historic village located approximately half an hour south of Asheville, best known as the home of the Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site, which preserves the author's beloved home estate Connemara. The lovely village, which was established in the early 19th century, has become known as the "Little Charleston of the Mountains" and has become a popular summer home site for Southeast residents to escape the coastal heat during the summer months. Couples can peruse the village's charming downtown district, which is home to local businesses like the Wrinkled Egg folk art gallery and boutique and the Gallery at Flat Rock. Flat Rock Playhouse, North Carolina's state theater, presents a full season of Broadway musicals, comedies, and dramas throughout the year. Other attractions include the Western North Carolina Air Museum, which showcases award-winning restored and vintage airplanes.
