Craving coastal breezes and aviation history? I recommend heading to Kitty Hawk! Perched on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, this charming town is where beachy relaxation meets historic innovation. You can spend your days soaking up sun by the Atlantic, then explore the very place where flight was born. It’s the kind of getaway that feels both energizing and laid-back.

Kitty Hawk, NC Highlights:

  • Wright Brothers National Memorial: I never get tired of visiting this site—standing where the first powered flight took place in 1903 is inspiring every time. The museum and grounds bring aviation history to life.
  • Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve: Whether you’re into hiking, kayaking, or biking, this coastal forest is a gem. I love how peaceful it is—you can really connect with nature here.
  • Kitty Hawk Beach: One of my favorite beaches on the Outer Banks! The wide sandy shore is perfect for lounging, surfing, or catching a morning sunrise. Pack a chair and stay a while.
  • Duck Woods Country Club: If you golf, you’ll love this scenic course surrounded by the natural beauty of the Outer Banks. It’s semi-private, but tee times are usually available.
  • Monument to a Century of Flight: This outdoor monument is incredibly cool—it features granite pylons tracing 100 years of aviation milestones. I always find something new to appreciate when I walk through it.

Best Time to Visit Kitty Hawk, NC

If you ask me, late spring through early fall (May to October) is the sweet spot. That’s when beach weather is perfect, shops and restaurants are in full swing, and the water is warm enough for a dip. Early summer and September are especially nice—fewer crowds, great surf, and gorgeous sunsets.

How to Get to Kitty Hawk, NC

  • If you are traveling by car: I usually take U.S. Route 158 over the Wright Memorial Bridge—it’s a scenic drive and brings you right into town. It’s about 1.5 hours from Norfolk, VA.
  • By Air: Norfolk International Airport (ORF) is your best bet for flights, then it’s a beautiful drive to the Outer Banks. You can also fly regionally into Dare County Regional Airport in Manteo if you want to land even closer.
  • By Shuttle or Rental Car: I recommend renting a car so you can explore freely, but local shuttles are available from the airport too.

Where to Stay in Kitty Hawk, NC

  • Hilton Garden Inn Outer Banks – I love staying here when I want oceanfront views and easy beach access. The balconies and pool make it feel like a full-on resort experience.
  • Sea Scape Beach & Golf Villas – These condos are great if you’re traveling with family or a group. You get space, a kitchen, and resort-style perks—all near the golf course.
  • Saltaire Cottages – For something a bit cozier and vintage-chic, I always suggest these beachside cottages. They have that old-school Outer Banks charm, and you’re just steps from the sand.
