This public history institution has its headquarters in a large four-story, limestone alms house that was built in 1872. It was in service until 1958 and could accommodate up to 100 indigent people at any one time. The Society occupied the building in 1959, the 300th anniversary of Baltimore County. Slaves, soldiers and steelworkers contributed to the county's rich history. Their stories are contained in the 9000 artifacts, 8000 photographs, 4000 books, 500 maps and hundreds of archival collections curated by the museum. The material is presented as exhibits and used for presentations, publications and research. The shop sells prints, artwork, books and note cards.
