Looking for a laid-back waterfront escape with just the right touch of charm? I think you should head to Solomons Island! The first time I visited, I instantly felt like I had stumbled into a peaceful harbor village where time slows down. You’ll find it right where the Patuxent River meets the Chesapeake Bay, and trust me—it’s all about sunsets, seafood, and smooth sailing. Whether you’re out on a boat, walking the marina, or just relaxing with a crab cake and a view, Solomons Island is where I go when I need to unwind and reconnect with the water.

Best Time to Visit

From my experience, late spring through early fall (May to October) is when Solomons really shines. You’ll catch the best weather for boating and beach-hopping, and the waterfront comes alive with local festivals and open-air dining. I especially love visiting in summer—everything’s open, the vibe is upbeat, and you can practically feel the breeze off the bay no matter where you go. If you like a bit of action mixed with your relaxation, you’ll enjoy it then too.

How to Get There

  • Driving in? I usually take MD Route 4—it’s about 1.5 hours from D.C. and a little under 2 hours from Baltimore or Richmond. Not a bad drive, and the moment you cross the bridge onto the island, you’ll feel the shift.
  • Flying? I’ve flown into Reagan National Airport (DCA) before—it’s the closest at around 1.5 hours. BWI and Dulles work too if you’re coming from farther away, though the drive’s a little longer. Renting a car is the way to go if you want to explore the area.
  • Have a boat? Then you’re in luck—Solomons is one of my favorite boating destinations. There are plenty of marinas with slips and services. I’ve even pulled in just for lunch and ended up staying the night because it’s that relaxing.

Where to Stay

  • Hilton Garden Inn Solomons – I stayed here when I wanted comfort and convenience. It’s modern, has a great pool, and makes a good base for exploring local attractions. If you like easy, you’ll be happy here.
  • Solomons Victorian Inn – This one’s a favorite of mine when I’m in the mood for something cozier and romantic. The rooms have that elegant touch, and the view of the Patuxent River is absolutely worth waking up early for.
  • Blue Heron Inn – I love how close this place is to the boardwalk and docks. It’s a smaller, quiet spot—perfect when I just want to walk everywhere, eat seafood, and watch the boats go by. You’ll feel like a local here.
