If you’ve ever wanted to walk in the footsteps of a U.S. president, I highly recommend heading to Hodgenville, Kentucky! I visited this charming little town in central Kentucky on a summer road trip, and it really surprised me. It’s most famous as the birthplace of Abraham Lincoln, but I also found myself enjoying the peaceful pace and rolling countryside. If you love history—and a bit of small-town charm—you’ll feel right at home here.

What I Think You’ll Enjoy in Hodgenville, KY

  • Start with the Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historical Park – When I stood in front of the symbolic cabin, I felt like I was stepping into history. You’ll appreciate the peaceful trails and beautiful memorial, even if you’re not a major history buff.
  • Traveling with kids? Don’t miss the Lincoln Museum – I spent an afternoon there exploring life-size dioramas and exhibits. It’s interactive and easy to navigate, perfect for families or anyone curious about Lincoln’s life.
  • For a quick, meaningful stroll, head to Lincoln Square – I loved walking around the bronze statue of young Lincoln. You’ll find charming shops and friendly locals nearby too.
  • Need a break outdoors? Have a picnic at Creekfront Park – I brought lunch from a local deli and just relaxed by the creek. It’s quiet, shady, and a great spot to slow down your day.
  • Like scenic drives? I suggest cruising the Lincoln Heritage Scenic Highway – I followed this route for some unforgettable views and small-town stops. If you’re on a road trip, it’s a beautiful stretch you don’t want to skip.

When I Recommend Visiting Hodgenville, KY

I’ve found that spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) are the best times to visit. I went in late spring, and the blooming wildflowers made the drive absolutely stunning. If you’re visiting in fall, you’ll catch some amazing foliage. Summer is still a great time to explore museums and festivals—just be ready for warm afternoons.

How I Got to Hodgenville (And How You Can Too)

  • By Car: I drove in from Louisville—it took just about an hour. If you’re coming from Nashville, it’s around a two-hour drive. Either way, you’ll enjoy a scenic countryside route.
  • By Plane: I flew into Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF), then rented a car. The drive down was smooth and gave me time to relax before diving into town attractions.
  • By Bus: There’s no direct bus into Hodgenville, but I used Elizabethtown as a hub for regional transit. If you're flexible, that’s a good option to consider.

Where I Stayed (And What I Suggest for You)

  • The Lincoln Loft – I stayed here and loved how unique and cozy it felt. It’s a great option if you want something local and different.
  • Hampton Inn Elizabethtown – Just 15 minutes away, I found this a super convenient choice with all the comforts you’d expect. Perfect if you want to stay close but need a few more amenities.
  • Local Inns and Cabins – I also looked into some nearby cabins, which would be perfect if you’re after a quiet, rustic stay. You’ll find a few options tucked in the countryside.
