When I wanted a mix of Civil War history, rolling countryside, and small-town friendliness, I found it all in Richmond—and I think you’ll feel the same way. Tucked into the heart of central Kentucky, Richmond has this relaxed charm that instantly puts you at ease. Whether I was walking through historic battlefield parks, browsing local shops downtown, or hiking a trail just outside of town, it all felt genuine and grounded in Southern hospitality.

Best Time to Visit

If you’re planning your trip, I’d recommend visiting between April and October. I’ve been there in spring and fall when the weather was just right for being outdoors—you’ll love the fresh air and colorful views. Summer is great too if you’re up for outdoor festivals and long walks through the countryside. And even in winter, it’s got a quiet charm. I’ve ducked into museums and local cafés on colder days and still felt like I was getting the full experience.

How to Get There

  • Driving? That’s usually how I get there. Richmond is right off I-75, about 30 minutes south of Lexington. If you’re coming from Louisville or Knoxville, it’s a smooth 2-hour drive either way—perfect for a weekend escape.
  • Flying in? I’ve flown into Blue Grass Airport (LEX) in Lexington, and it’s an easy 40-minute drive to Richmond. Car rentals are simple, and you’ll want one to explore the surrounding area.
  • Bus travel? I’ve checked out Greyhound and regional bus options, and they do run to Richmond, but honestly—I’d suggest driving if you can. It gives you the freedom to explore places like Berea or Daniel Boone National Forest without worrying about schedules.

Where to Stay

  • Hampton Inn Richmond – I’ve stayed here for quick trips and it’s always comfortable. You’ll appreciate the free breakfast and indoor pool—it’s right off the highway and close to restaurants and shopping.
  • Historic Boone Tavern Hotel (Berea) – If you don’t mind a short drive, this inn in Berea (about 20 minutes south) is a real gem. I loved the historic architecture and cozy dining room. It’s a great way to add a little heritage and elegance to your trip.
  • Airbnb & Vacation Rentals – I’ve also rented a quiet cabin just outside town, and if you’re craving a peaceful escape, you’ll find some great options. From charming downtown apartments to countryside homes with big porches, there’s something for every vibe.
