Attraction Spotlight: Lexington History Museum

The Lexington History Museum in Lexington, KY aims to bring history into the modern age. Faced by challenges caused by the venue limitation and size issues, they have teamed up with other organizations to offer a series of pocket museums or smaller scale installations around town. They are also looking to fully embrace and build their online presence in the belief that museums should offer just as much online as they do in person.

Their online presence is a community-driven project overseen and curated by accredited historians. They have been bringing together the most interesting segments and facets of Lexington’s rich history and publishing them all in on easily accessed website. This website allows anyone to contribute and so the project is growing fast as budding historians look to paint pictures of their own understanding of the region's history. Due to the final safety guard of accreditation, it hasn’t descended into warring or madness just yet and it’s an interesting and possibly novel way for the history of a town to be logged online.

Another way the museum has brought themselves into the new age is the selection of virtual exhibits available online through the website. Whenever an exhibit goes out for display, using modern technology the information and collection is preserved in photo and on a page and is accessible to all free of charge. You can log on to the website and browse through past displays such as the Window on the War exhibit, which is an in-depth look at what life was like in Lexington during the Civil War. They have several different displays looking into the history and culture of the local Native American tribes as well as snapshots of certain periods of history in the local area, such as the Prohibition. It’s another fascinating and futuristic way to bring both the museum and the intrigue it offers into the palm of the visitor's hand.

Pocket Museums

Due to the limitations imposed on the museum itself in terms of size and location, they have branched out, offering small concise installations in partner buildings that highlight a specific topic or part of history. Currently, they have two touring exhibits, one looking into the history and heritage of premium hotels in the local area and one an in-depth examination of the history of the IBM Company.

The museum houses these two major installations at venues across Lexington; the hotels exhibit is currently at the Lexington Financial Center and the IBM showcase is at the Government Center.

Attraction Spotlight: University of Kentucky Art Museum

The University of Kentucky Art Museum in Lexington is a curated exhibition space that is home to different art displays throughout the year and has an interesting rotation of travelling artists and works. There is a permanent collection curated by the museum itself and guided tours of both the temporary and permanent art showcases are available.

Currently on display, they have the works of Thomas Nozkowski and Frank Doring. Both exhibits will be on display from May until August at the Art Museum. Nozkowski’s work could be best described as modestly abstract; he works with textured surfaces and enigmatic shapes to highlight and contrast his message, and no piece ever extends past 3 feet in any one direction. Instead of basing the installation solely in the artist's extensive works, they asked the artist himself to pair some of his own pieces with artworks found in the museum's permanent collection. In this way, they are able to not only bring out the best of his unique vision, but also it acts as a counterpoint and allows both pieces to shine all the brighter. Doring’s work looks to paint a stark and surreal snapshot of the life and vibrancy of the phenomenon that is the rural state fair. Through a series of frank photographs taken from 2011 until the present day, he captures the heart and soul of these events and sprinkles them with enough humour and wit to bring out their true meaning and draw of these events, and each spectacle is captured perfectly in his work.

Whilst admission is free and they only ask that you pay attention during your visit, donations are requested and you can also become a member of the museum to receive numerous benefits, updates, and input into the future direction of the space. They accept voluntary collectors and docents as well, who will receive training, lectures, art programs, and trips in exchange for donations to the permanent collection housed at the site or volunteer-guided tours of the exhibits to groups of students and adults.

Attraction Spotlight: Mary Todd Lincoln House

Mary Todd Lincoln is perhaps one of the most interesting First Ladies to have ever stepped foot in the White House, and this museum in Lexington, KY introduces you to her history and her heart.

The building has been carefully and lovingly restored in the style of the 19th century. The house served as the Todd family home and was Mary Todd’s birthplace and place of residence until she moved to her elder sister’s house in Springfield, Illinois, where she met and married Abraham Lincoln.

The home was built as an inn in 1803; the property then became the home of businessman and politician Robert S. Todd in 1832. Unfortunately, when Mary’s father died, a discrepancy in his will caused the property to go up for public auction; however, this, and the resulting inventory list, meant that it could be restored so accurately and appropriately. The 14-room property is filled with period furniture and furnishings as well as family portraits of both the Todds and the Lincolns, and it acts as a memorial to both. The original building rather conversely contained separate slave quarters, however this has not been restored and instead visitors can enjoy the recently added period-appropriate garden for a pleasant moment of reflection.

The property is under the protection and organization of the Kentucky Mansions Preservation Foundation. They have undertaken various different properties and this isn’t even the first they’ve restored with links to Lincoln. The Mary Todd Lincoln House was restored and then opened to the public in its current iteration as a museum in 1977. The property is run entirely by the nonprofit organization KMPF and its upkeep and running costs are all paid for by the admission, gift shop, and other associated donations.

Throughout the year, the venue also hosts special guest speakers or similar events and you can check the website for more information. The house features on many famous tours of Lexington, thus helping to champion the town’s links to various historically important figures. The venue is an interesting look at the way America used to live and the Todd family keeping slaves highlights just how quickly and dramatically the world can be changed. All it takes is one man and a woman.
