Discovering charm and history in Wichita
We drove north from Oklahoma City about 2½ hours (160 miles on I-35) into Wichita, the “Air Capital of the World.”
Wichita, right in the heart of Kansas, is one of my favorite places to explore because it’s full of surprises and underrated gems that make every visit feel exciting. I found the city center so vibrant, and walking around Old Town with its brick streets and cool converted warehouses was one of the best ways to soak in the local vibe.
I thought the Keeper of the Plains monument, where the Big and Little Arkansas Rivers meet, was pure magic—especially at sunset when the firepots are lit. It’s easily one of the most spectacular sights I’ve seen in Kansas and a brilliant idea for a family evening outing or a romantic stroll.
My favorite hidden gem had to be Botanica Wichita. This place is filled with gardens, sculptures, and seasonal displays that make it such a joyful and colorful spot to wander. It’s affordable, unique, and the butterfly house was an absolute dream for me.
I loved the Sedgwick County Zoo, which is near downtown, and found it to be one of the coolest and most underrated zoos in the country. With more than 3,000 animals, it made for an awesome weekend adventure that felt both fun and educational.
Another exciting stop for me was the Wichita Art Museum, located along the Arkansas River. I thought the mix of classic and contemporary works made it a spectacular space to explore, and the glass bridge over the lobby was so unusual and cool!

Soaking up college town vibes in Lawrence
We drove about 45 minutes west from Kansas City (40 miles on I-70) to Lawrence, a college town with a fiery past.
Lawrence, Kansas, about 40 minutes west of Kansas City, is one of my favorite college towns to visit, and I always find something exciting and unique here. The energy of Massachusetts Street, or “Mass Street” as locals call it, makes for the absolute best place to stroll, shop, and discover cool cafés and vibrant local boutiques.
I loved exploring the University of Kansas campus, which sits on a hill and has some of the most spectacular views of the city. The Spencer Museum of Art was an underrated gem for me, with an amazing collection that felt both inspiring and affordable to enjoy since admission is free.
My favorite unusual spot was the Natural History Museum on campus, where I found the iconic Panorama of North American Mammals. It was so interesting to see, and I thought it made for a joyful family stop that was also educational.
I also thought Clinton Lake, just a short drive from downtown, was a dream for an outdoor getaway. With trails, boating, and peaceful sunsets, it felt like a hidden gem where you can relax, recharge, or plan an exciting weekend camping trip.
One of the coolest things I did was catch live music at a local venue—Lawrence is known for its vibrant scene, and I thought the Granada Theatre was the best place to experience that magic. It’s such an awesome mix of students, locals, and travelers all enjoying the night together.

Finding quiet power in Topeka
We drove about 30 minutes west from Lawrence (26 miles along I-70) to Topeka, the Kansas capital.
Topeka felt to me like one of the most underrated gems in the Midwest, and I loved how it balanced history, culture, and fun in such an affordable way. Just an hour west of Kansas City, it made for a brilliant weekend getaway with plenty to see and do.
My favorite highlight was the Kansas State Capitol building. I thought the guided tour was an absolute dream for history lovers, and climbing up to the dome gave me spectacular views of the city. It’s definitely one of the coolest free experiences in town.
I found the Brown v. Board of Education National Historic Site to be one of the most meaningful and inspiring places in Topeka. The museum was powerful, and walking through the exhibits felt like stepping into an important chapter of American history that everyone should see.
For a joyful family day, I really enjoyed the Topeka Zoo and Conservation Center inside Gage Park. It felt like a hidden gem with unique animals and fun attractions, and the nearby mini-train and carousel made it even more exciting for kids.
One of my favorite unusual discoveries was the Evel Knievel Museum. It was such a cool and unexpected place, packed with motorcycles, jumpsuits, and interactive exhibits that made the daredevil’s story come alive. I thought it was one of the best quirky stops in Kansas.

Walking the wild west in Dodge City
We drove just under an hour east from Garden City to Dodge City. History is everywhere.
Dodge City, located in southwest Kansas, felt to me like stepping straight into the Wild West, and I thought it was one of the coolest and most unusual places to visit in the state. Known as the “Cowboy Capital,” this town is packed with history, character, and plenty of awesome things to do.
My favorite stop was Boot Hill Museum, right near downtown. I thought the recreated Old West street, complete with saloons, shops, and costumed interpreters, was absolutely one of the best ways to experience frontier life. I loved the evening gunfight reenactments—they were exciting and joyful for the whole family.
I also found the Santa Fe Trail Tracks just outside of town to be a hidden gem. Standing there and seeing the wagon ruts from 200 years ago felt magical and gave me a deep sense of history that was both unusual and amazing.
The Dodge City Trail of Fame was another unique surprise. I loved spotting sidewalk medallions honoring famous figures like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, and it made walking through town feel like a fun treasure hunt.
One of my favorite underrated stops was the Boot Hill Distillery, housed in the city’s old municipal building. The atmosphere was vibrant, and sipping on craft spirits made from local grains felt like such a brilliant idea for a cool evening out.

The short drive from Emporia put us right on the edge of the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve (10,894 acres, free entry).
Cottonwood Falls, tucked in the heart of the Flint Hills about 20 minutes west of Emporia, struck me as one of the most magical and underrated gems in Kansas. I thought the small-town charm mixed with spectacular prairie views made it the perfect weekend getaway.
My favorite highlight was the Chase County Courthouse, the oldest operating courthouse in the state. I loved its unusual French Renaissance style and the way it stood proudly in the center of town—it felt like stepping back in time to a truly unique Kansas treasure.
I also thought the Flint Hills National Scenic Byway, which runs right through Cottonwood Falls, was one of the coolest drives I’ve ever taken. Rolling hills, tallgrass prairie, and endless skies made the journey feel absolutely dreamlike, especially at sunset.
One of the best stops nearby was the Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, just north of town. I loved hiking the trails and spotting bison—it was both exciting and peaceful, and I thought it was the most spectacular way to experience the untouched Kansas landscape.
For a joyful and affordable evening, I enjoyed dining at the historic Grand Central Hotel & Grill. The warm atmosphere and hearty meals made it feel like a hidden gem perfect for either a romantic dinner or a family night out.
What I loved most about Cottonwood Falls was its vibrant yet quiet spirit—it’s small but filled with history, natural beauty, and cool experiences that make it one of my absolute favorite Kansas getaways.

Feeling grounded in Manhattan
They call it the “Little Apple,” and while the skyline is modest, the scenery is anything but.
Manhattan, Kansas, known as “The Little Apple,” quickly became one of my favorite places to explore in the Flint Hills. About two hours west of Kansas City, it felt like an awesome mix of vibrant college town energy and spectacular natural beauty, making it one of the best underrated destinations in the state.
I thought Aggieville, the historic shopping and entertainment district near Kansas State University, was pure magic. Packed with cool bars, cafés, and unique local shops, it was the absolute best spot to grab a bite, catch live music, or just soak in the youthful energy of the city.
My favorite hidden gem was the Flint Hills Discovery Center. I loved how interactive and interesting the exhibits were, teaching me about the unusual and rare tallgrass prairie ecosystem. It felt both educational and joyful, especially for families.
I also thought Konza Prairie, just south of town, was spectacular. Hiking those trails through rolling hills and wide-open skies felt like stepping into a Kansas dream. The views at sunset were unforgettable and made for one of the most romantic and affordable adventures I’ve had in the state.
The Marianna Kistler Beach Museum of Art on campus was another underrated stop I enjoyed. It offered a vibrant collection of regional and contemporary works, and I thought it was a brilliant idea for a quiet afternoon indoors.
For me, Manhattan had the coolest balance—exciting nightlife, family-friendly attractions, and some of the most exceptional natural landscapes in Kansas. Every visit feels fresh, fun, and filled with hidden treasures to discover.

Abilene, Kansas: Trains, Trails & Tallgrass Memories
We drove just under an hour west from Manhattan to Abilene, best known as the boyhood home of Dwight D. Eisenhower.
Abilene, Kansas, about 30 minutes east of Salina, completely won me over with its mix of history, charm, and unique attractions. I thought it was one of the absolute best small towns in the Midwest to spend a weekend, and it felt like a hidden gem packed with amazing surprises.
My favorite highlight was the Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum & Boyhood Home. Walking through the exhibits and seeing Ike’s personal story unfold was both inspiring and unusual—it felt like a dream opportunity to connect with history in such a meaningful way.
I also loved the Seelye Mansion, which is one of the most spectacular historic homes I’ve ever toured. With Tiffany-style lamps, original furnishings, and even a working bowling alley in the basement, it felt like stepping into another era. For me, it was an underrated treasure that left a lasting impression.
The Abilene & Smoky Valley Railroad was another cool and joyful experience. Riding the vintage train through the Kansas countryside felt magical, and I thought it was the best family-friendly adventure in town.
I found Old Abilene Town to be exciting as well, with gunfight reenactments, can-can dancers, and rustic storefronts that brought the Wild West back to life. It was such a vibrant and fun way to spend the afternoon.
For me, Abilene is one of the most exceptional small towns in Kansas—affordable, historic, and filled with both romantic and family-friendly experiences that make every visit feel unforgettable.
