When I want something charming, a little quirky, and full of heart, I head to Wamego—and I think you’ll love it too. This small Kansas town surprised me the first time I visited. You’ll feel it the moment you stroll downtown, pass a windmill in the park, or spot a pair of ruby slippers. I’ve explored the Oz Museum, sipped wine with a Wizard of Oz twist, and felt like I’d stepped into a magical mix of Americana and prairie charm. Whether you're road-tripping or planning a weekend detour, Wamego delivers the kind of warmth that sticks with you.
Best Time to Visit
I recommend visiting in the spring or fall—April to June or September to October—when the weather’s just right for walking around town, enjoying festivals, or hanging out in the park. You’ll catch blooming flowers in spring or colorful trees in the fall. I’ve also come in summer, and while it’s hotter, it’s full of family fun and small-town energy that you’ll really feel.
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I usually drive in on Highway 24—it’s only about 15 minutes east of Manhattan and around an hour west of Topeka. You’ll enjoy the scenic drive through the Flint Hills.
- By Air: When I fly in, I land at Manhattan Regional Airport (MHK)—just 25 minutes away. If you’re coming from farther out, Kansas City International (MCI) is about two hours away, and I’ve done that route too with no trouble.
- By Bus: There are a few shuttle and regional bus options from Manhattan, but honestly, I recommend driving if you can—you’ll have more freedom to explore the area.
Where to Stay
- Wamego Inn & Suites – I stayed here once and loved the convenience. You’ll get free breakfast, an indoor pool, and it’s super close to downtown—it’s perfect if you want comfort without fuss.
- Simmer Motel – I’ve stopped here for a budget-friendly night, and it was a great choice. You’ll find updated rooms, friendly service, and a classic roadside motel feel with charm.
- Hotels in Manhattan – If you want more choices or a few extra amenities, I’ve found good chain hotels and boutiques in Manhattan, just a quick drive away.
Must-see if you are a first-time visitor:
- Oz Museum – I never get tired of this place. You’ll see over 2,000 pieces of Oz memorabilia—books, props, and collectibles that made me feel like a kid again.
- Columbian Theatre – I caught a show here once and it was unforgettable. You’ll love the 1893 World’s Fair murals and the historic opera house atmosphere—it’s like stepping back in time.
- Wamego City Park – I always take a stroll here. You’ll find a windmill, shaded walking paths, and the adorable Mini Oz village that’s fun for all ages.
- Oz Winery – I had so much fun tasting their themed wines. You’ll sip “Drunken Munchkin” or “Witch in the Ditch” in a relaxed, colorful space—perfect after a day of exploring.
- Beecher Bible and Rifle Church – If you’re into history like I am, make time for this 1850s stone church. You’ll learn about Kansas’ abolitionist roots in a setting that feels meaningful and authentic.
