Originally built back in the 1890’s, the restored Columbian Theatre in downtown Wamego, Kansas serves as both a theatre venue and an art gallery. The building houses the largest decorative arts collection from the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Among the pieces in the “Columbian Exhibition” are six massive paintings that can be seen upstairs. The gallery on the main floor regularly features art exhibits during the year. In addition to the artwork on display, the Columbian Theatre also still presents plays, concerts, and musicals on its stage. Visitors can also schedule a tour of the theatre and its artwork.

Founded in 1973, the Wamego Historical Society and Museum was first opened in the 1866 Union Pacific Railroad stone workshed. The Wamego Historical Society’s Prairie Town Village began during the 1980’s. Both the village and the museum are located in a 20-acre, beautiful city park in Wamego, Kansas. The Wamego Historical Society’s historic Prairie Village and museum features authentic 1800’s buildings, as well as history tracing the transformation of Pottawatomie County and Wamego in particular from the area’s first inhabitants, the Potawatomie and Konza Indians to the Underground Railroad. There’s also artifacts from the 1893 Columbian Exposition on display.

The Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park was envisioned more than fifty years ago to be a place to celebrate and honor the Connecticut abolitionists and their accomplishments in helping defeat slavery. The park now fulfills its original purpose and more. Located in the Flint Hills of Kansas along the Native Stone Scenic Byway, Mount Mitchell provides visitors with a history lesson on the “Enduring Struggle for Freedom,” the culture of Flint Hills, and tallgrass prairie. The 170-acre Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park is part of the Network to Freedom Program of the National Park Service, which commemorates the Underground Railroad.
