The Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park was envisioned more than fifty years ago to be a place to celebrate and honor the Connecticut abolitionists and their accomplishments in helping defeat slavery. The park now fulfills its original purpose and more. Located in the Flint Hills of Kansas along the Native Stone Scenic Byway, Mount Mitchell provides visitors with a history lesson on the “Enduring Struggle for Freedom,” the culture of Flint Hills, and tallgrass prairie. The 170-acre Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park is part of the Network to Freedom Program of the National Park Service, which commemorates the Underground Railroad.
