Searching for a historic riverside escape? I’d definitely point you to Atchison, Kansas! The moment I saw the Missouri River winding past those gorgeous old Victorian homes, I knew I’d found a gem. This town has so much charm. If you’re into haunted history, river lore, or just looking for that slower pace with friendly faces, Atchison is one of those Midwest spots you won’t want to miss. I loved how easy it was to explore and how rich the stories are in every corner.
Best Time to Visit
I recommend planning your trip between spring and fall, from April through October. I visited in the fall once, and the changing leaves along the riverfront were just beautiful. You’ll also get to enjoy warm weather for outdoor walking tours, festivals, and scenic views. If you're into ghost stories like I am, October brings a whole lineup of spooky events—it’s the perfect time to explore Atchison’s haunted side!
How to Get There
- If you are traveling by car: I’ve driven in from Kansas City—it’s a smooth ride, just about an hour northwest along US-59 or US-73. From Lawrence, it’s even quicker—around 45 minutes. You’ll pass through some peaceful countryside along the way.
- By Air: I flew into Kansas City International Airport (MCI), which is super convenient. From there, it’s about a 45-minute drive to Atchison. I recommend renting a car so you can explore the surrounding area at your own pace.
- By Train: Amtrak doesn’t stop directly in Atchison, but you can ride into Kansas City and rent a car for the short drive up. I’ve done that before—it’s easy, and you’ll be soaking in river views in no time.
Where to Stay
- Holiday Inn Express & Suites Atchison – I’ve stayed here when I wanted something modern and reliable. You get free breakfast, an indoor pool, and you’re close to downtown—perfect for walking to restaurants and local attractions.
- Glick Mansion Bed & Breakfast – If you love staying somewhere with soul, I highly recommend this place. I spent a night here and felt like I’d stepped back in time. The mansion’s been lovingly restored, the hosts were amazing, and breakfast felt like home.
- Super 8 by Wyndham Atchison – For a quick, affordable stay, this one does the job. I met a couple here who were exploring Amelia Earhart sites and loved how easy it was to get around from the hotel. You’ll find it’s a great base if you’re keeping things low-key.
